वह एक छोटी सी लड़की थी जिसने पहली बार कुछ दूरी पर अजीब से आकार का कुछ देखा।
It was a little girl who first saw the mysterious shape in the distance.
जैसे ही वह पास आया, उसने देखा कि यह एक भारीभरकम गर्भवती महिला है।
As the shape moved closer, she saw that it was a heavily pregnant woman.
छोटी लड़की शर्मीली, पर बहादुर थी, वह उस महिला के पास गई। “हमें इसे अपने साथ रखना चाहिए,” छोटी लड़की के साथ के लोगों ने फैसला किया। “हम इसे और इसके बच्चे को सुरक्षित रखेंगे।”
Shy but brave, the little girl moved nearer to the woman.
“We must keep her with us,” the little girl’s people decided. “We’ll keep her and her child safe.”
बच्चा जल्द ही आने वाला था। “ज़ोर लगाओ!” “कंबलों को लाओ!” “पानी लाओ!” “ज़ोर से!!!”
The child was soon on its way.
“Push!”
“Bring blankets!”
“Water!”
“Puuuuussssshhh!!!”
जब उन्होंने बच्चे को देखा, सभी लोग सदमे में चले गए। “गधा?!”
But when they saw the baby, everyone jumped back in shock.
“A donkey?!”
हर कोई बहस करने लगा। “हमने कहा था कि हम माँ और बच्चे को सुरक्षित रखेंगे, और यही हमने किया,” कुछ ने कहा। “पर ये हमारे लिए बुरी किस्मत लेकर आएँगे !” बाकियों ने कहा।
Everyone began to argue.
“We said we would keep mother and child safe, and that’s what we’ll do,” said some.
“But they will bring us bad luck!” said others.
औरत ने फिर से अपने आपको अकेला पाया। वह परेशान थी कि वह अपने अनचाहे बच्चे के साथ क्या करे। वह परेशान थी कि वह अपने साथ क्या करे।
And so the woman found herself alone again.
She wondered what to do with this awkward child.
She wondered what to do with herself.
अंत में उसे मानना पड़ा कि वह उसका बच्चा है और वह उसकी माँ।
But finally she had to accept that he was her child and she was his mother.
यदि बच्चा उसी आकार में रहता, छोटा ही, तो शायद चीज़ें अलग होतीं। पर गधा बच्चा इतना बड़ा हो गया कि माँ की पीठ पर नहीं आ पाता था। उसने बहुत कोशिश की लेकिन वह आदमियों की तरह व्यवहार नहीं कर पाया। उसकी माँ ने बहुत कोशिश की लेकिन उनके हाथ निराशा ही लगी। कभी-कभी वे उसे करने के लिए ऐसे काम देतीं जो जानवरों के लिए बने हैं।
Now, if the child had stayed that same, small size, everything might have been different. But the donkey child grew and grew until he could no longer fit on his mother’s back.
And no matter how hard he tried, he could not behave like a human being. His mother was often tired and frustrated. Sometimes she made him do work meant for animals.
गधे के अंदर दुविधा और गुस्से का भाव भर गया। वह यह नहीं कर सकता था और वह नहीं कर सकता था। वह इस तरह नहीं हो सकता था और उस तरह भी नहीं। इस बात से वह इतना नाराज़ हो गया कि एक दिन, उसने अपनी माँ को धक्का मार कर ज़मीन पर गिरा दिया।
Confusion and anger built up inside Donkey. He couldn’t do this and he couldn’t do that. He couldn’t be like this and he couldn’t be like that.
He became so angry that, one day, he kicked his mother to the ground.
अपने इस व्यवहार से गधा बहुत शर्मिंदा हो गया। वह वहाँ से जितनी दूर और जितनी तेज़ी से दौड़ सकता था दौड़ने लगा।
Donkey was filled with shame. He started to run away as far and fast as he could.
जब उसने दौड़ना बंद किया तब रात हो चुकी थी और वह खो गया था। “ढ़ेंचू-ढ़ेंचू?” उसने अंधेरे में आवाज़ की। “ढ़ेंचू-ढ़ेंचू?” उसकी आवाज़ वापस गूँजी। वह अकेला था। उसने अपने आपको सख्त गेंद की तरह सिकोड़ा, और दुखी होकर गहरी नींद में सो गया।
By the time he stopped running, it was night, and Donkey was lost.
“Hee haw?” he whispered to the darkness.
“Hee Haw?” it echoed back. He was alone.
Curling himself into a tight ball, he fell into a deep and troubled sleep.
गधा जब उठा तो उसने पाया कि एक अनजान बूढ़ा आदमी उसे घूर रहा है। उसने बूढ़े आदमी की आँखों में देखा जहाँ उसे उम्मीद की किरण नज़र आई।
Donkey woke up to find a strange old man staring down at him. He looked into the old man’s eyes and started to feel a twinkle of hope.
गधा उस बूढ़े आदमी के साथ रहने चला गया, उसने उसे जीने के कई तरीके सिखाए। गधे ने बूढ़े आदमी की बातें सुनीं और उनसे सीखा। उन्होंने एक दूसरे की मदद की और अपने सुख-दुख मिलकर बाँटे।
Donkey went to stay with the old man, who taught him many different ways to survive.
Donkey listened and learned, and so did the old man. They helped each other, and they laughed together.
एक सुबह, बूढ़े आदमी ने गधे से खुद को एक पहाड़ की चोटी पर ले चलने को कहा।
One morning, the old man asked Donkey to carry him to the top of a mountain.
ऊँचाई पर जाकर बादलों के बीच में वे सो गए। गधे ने सपना देखा कि उसकी माँ बीमार है और उसे बुला रही है। और जब वह उठा…
High up amongst the clouds they fell asleep.
Donkey dreamed that his mother was sick and calling to him.
And when he woke up…
…बादल हट चुके थे और उसका दोस्त बूढ़ा आदमी भी वहाँ से गायब हो चुका था।
… the clouds had disappeared along with his friend, the old man.
गधे को पता था कि उसे अब क्या करना है।
Donkey finally knew what to do.
गधे ने अपनी माँ को खोज लिया। वह अकेली थी और बच्चे के खो जाने से दुखी थी। उन्होंने एक दूसरे को बहुत देर तक देखा। और फिर ज़ोर से एक दूसरे को गले लगा लिया।
Donkey found his mother, alone and mourning her lost child. They stared at each other for a long time.
And then hugged each other very hard.
गधा बच्चा और उसकी माँ साथ मिलकर रहने लगे और साथ ही उन्होंने जीने के कई तरीके ढूँढ़ लिए। धीरे-धीरे, उनके चारों ओर, और भी परिवार रहने लगे।
The donkey child and his mother have grown together and found many ways of living side by side.
Slowly, all around them, other families have started to settle.
