Khayanga het baie gelukkig saam
met haar ouers gebly, tot op die
ouderdom van tien toe hulle oorlede
is.
Khayanga lived with her parents
happily until they died when she
was ten years old.
Khayanga was ingeneem deur Rosa,
ʼn verlangse familielid. Rosa was
baie goed vir Khayanga maar sy
was oud, swak en arm.
Khayanga was taken in by Rosa, a
distant relative.
Rosa was kind to Khayanga, but she
was old, frail and poor.
Khayanga het gereeld haar ouers se
grafte gaan besoek en hulle vertel
van haar swaarkry.
Khayanga often visited her parents’
graves to tell them of her misery.
geskenk ontvang. Dit was ʼn
spesiale pot wat uit haar ouers se
grafte verskyn het.
One day when she visited, she
received a gift. It was a very special
Gourd which appeared from her
parents’ graves.
liedjie gesing. Khayanga het die
stem herken, dit was haar oorlede
ma se stem. Die liedjie het so
gegaan…
Khayanga, ee, Khayanga!
The Gourd sang a beautiful and
soothing song. Khayanga
recognised the voice as that of her
late mother.
It went like this…
Khayanga, ee, Khayanga!
Our child the loved one!
You’re not alone, loved one!
Have this gourd, loved one!
Carry it everywhere you go, loved one!
Let it console you loved one!
Khayanga het haar spesiale pot
orals saam haar gedra. Met die
spesiale pot het Khayanga die
teenwoordigheid en bewaring van
haar ouers gevoel.
Khayanga carried her special Gourd
everywhere.
With her Gourd, Khayanga felt her
parents’ presence and protection.
Eendag het iets vreesliks met haar
spesiale pot gebeur. Die pot het
gebreek toe sy water by die rivier
gaan haal het. Khayanga se hart
het ook gebreek.
One day, something bad happened
to her special Gourd. It broke when
she was fetching water in the river.
Khayanga’s heart broke as well.
Khayanga het die stukkies van die
gebreekte pot in haar klein handjies
Wys my ʼn teken asb…
Dat julle nogsteeds by my is
Khayanga held the pieces of the
broken Gourd in her small hands
and sang:
Father and Mother,
See the gourd is broken.
The gourd you gave me.
What do I do, Mother and Father?
Be kind and show me a sign…
That you are still with me.
voete. Wanneer jy klaar gewas het,
maak jou oë toe.”
Khayanga het haar gehoorsaam en
eweskielik het die gebreekte pot
weer heel geword.
Khayanga heard her mother’s voice
saying to her:
“Our child, pick up the pieces that
are left.
Fetch water with them and wash
your feet.
When you finish washing, close your
eyes.”
Khayanga obeyed and suddenly,
the broken Gourd became whole
once again.
Khayanga het die spesiale pot
nogsteeds orals heen gedra. Orals
waar sy gekom het, het mense vir
mekaar gefluister, “Watter tipe pot
is dit?” Met die spesiale pot het
Khayanga alles gekry wat sy nodig
gehad het.
Khayanga continued to carry her
Gourd everywhere she went.
Wherever she passed, people
whispered to each other, “What
type of gourd is this?”
With her special Gourd, Khayanga
received everything she needed.
Met die spesiale pot het Khayanga
geweet dat haar ouers vir haar kyk
van bo af. Niks slegs kom met
Khayanga gebeur het nie.
With the special Gourd, Khayanga
knew that her parents were
watching over her.
Nothing bad could happen to her.
