Odongo và Apiyo sống trong thành phố cùng với bố. Cả hai đều mong đến kì nghỉ. Không những vì chúng không phải đến trường mà còn vì chúng có thể đến thăm bà. Bà sống trong một làng chài gần một cái hồ lớn.
Odongo and Apiyo lived in the city with their father. They looked forward to the holidays. Not just because school was closed, but because they went to visit their grandmother. She lived in a fishing village near a large lake.
Odongo y Apiyo vivían en la ciudad con su padre. Esperaban con ansias sus vacaciones. No sólo porque cerraban la escuela, sino porque iban a visitar a su abuela. Ella vivía en una aldea de pescadores cerca de un gran lago.
Odongo và Apiyo rất hào hứng bởi vì đây là lúc chúng lại được đến thăm bà. Đêm trước đó, chúng chuẩn bị hành lí và chuẩn bị cho chuyến đi dài tới làng của bà. Chúng không thể ngủ được và trò chuyện suốt đêm về kì nghỉ này.
Odongo and Apiyo were excited because it was time to visit their grandmother again. The night before, they packed their bags and got ready for the long journey to her village. They could not sleep and talked the whole night about the holiday.
Odongo y Apiyo estaban emocionados con la idea de visitar de nuevo a su abuela. La noche antes del viaje, empacaron sus cosas y dejaron todo listo para irse a la aldea. No pudieron dormir y se quedaron toda la noche hablando sobre sus vacaciones.
Sáng sớm hôm sau, chúng đi đến làng của bà bằng xe của bố. Họ chạy qua những rặng núi, thú hoang, và đồn điền trồng trà. Họ đếm những chiếc xe trên đường và hát.
Early the next morning, they left for the village in their father’s car. They drove past mountains, wild animals and tea plantations. They counted cars and sang songs.

After a while, the children were tired and fell asleep.

Bố đánh thức Odongo và Apiyo dậy khi họ tới làng. Họ thấy bà, bà Nyar-Kanyada, nằm nghỉ trên một tấm chiếu dưới cây. Nyar-Kanyada trong tiếng Luo có nghĩa là “con gái của người dân Kanyada”. Bà là một người phụ nữ mạnh mẽ và xinh đẹp.
Father woke up Odongo and Apiyo as they arrived in the village. They found Nyar-Kanyada, their grandmother, resting on a mat under a tree. Nyar-Kanyada in Luo, means ‘daughter of the people of Kanyada’. She was a strong and beautiful woman.
El padre despertó a Odongo y Apiyo cuando llegaron a la aldea. Se encontraron a su abuela, Nyar-Kanyada, descansando con una manta debajo de un árbol. Nyar-Kanyada significa “hija de la gente de Kanyada” en el idioma Luo. La abuela era una mujer fuerte y hermosa.
Nyar-Kanyada chào đón bọn trẻ vào nhà, nhảy múa quanh phòng, và ca hát một cách vui sướng. Các cháu bà cũng rất phấn khởi tặng bà quà mà chúng đã mang từ thành phố đến. Odongo nói: “Mở quà của cháu trước!” Apiyo nói: “Không, mở quà của cháu trước!”
Nyar-Kanyada welcomed them into the house and danced around the room singing with joy. Her grandchildren were excited to give her the presents they brought from the city. “First open my gift,” said Odongo. “No, my gift first!” said Apiyo.
Nyar-Kanyada les dio la bienvenida a su casa, bailando y cantando de alegría. Sus nietos estaban ansiosos por entregarle los regalos que le trajeron de la ciudad. “Abre mi regalo primero,” dijo Odongo. “¡No, mi regalo primero!” dijo Apiyo.
Sau khi bà mở quà xong, Nyar-Kanyada ban phước cho các cháu mình theo cách truyền thống.
After she opened the presents, Nyar-Kanyada blessed her grandchildren in a traditional way.
Después de abrir los regalos, Nyar-Kanyada le dio la bendición tradicional a sus nietos.
Sau đó, Odongo và Apiyo đi ra ngoài. Chúng chạy đuổi bướm và chim.
Then Odongo and Apiyo went outside. They chased butterflies and birds.

They climbed trees and splashed in the water of the lake.
Escalaron árboles y chapotearon en el lago.

When it was dark they returned to the house for dinner. Before they could finish eating, they were falling asleep!

Ngày hôm sau, bố lái xe về thành phố, để bọn trẻ ở lại với và Nyar-Kanyada.
The next day, the children’s father drove back to the city leaving them with Nyar-Kanyada.
Al día siguiente, el padre de los niños se fue de vuelta a la ciudad y los dejó con Nyar-Kanyada.
Odongo và Apiyo giúp bà làm việc nhà. Chúng đi xách nước và lấy củi. Chúng nhặt trứng gà và hái rau trong vườn.
Odongo and Apiyo helped their grandmother with household chores. They fetched water and firewood. They collected eggs from the chickens and picked greens from the garden.
Odongo y Apiyo ayudaron a su abuela con las tareas del hogar. Fueron a buscar agua y leña. Recolectaron los huevos de las gallinas y recolectaron verduras de la huerta.
Nyar-Kanyada dạy các cháu mình làm món ugali mềm để ăn với món thịt hầm. Bà dạy cho chúng cách làm cơm dừa để ăn với cá nướng.
Nyar-Kanyada taught her grandchildren to make soft ugali to eat with stew. She showed them how to make coconut rice to eat with roast fish.
Nyar-Kanyada le enseñó a sus nietos a hacer ugali para comer con estofado. Les enseñó a hacer arroz con coco para comerlo con pescado asado.
Một buối sáng nọ, Odongo dẫn đàn bò của bà đi gậm cỏ. Chúng chạy vào trang trại của một người hàng xóm. Ông nông dân này rất giận Odongo. Ông dọa là sẽ giữ lại đàn bò vì chúng đã ăn vụ mùa của mình. Sau ngày hôm đó, Odongo luôn bảo đảm là đàn bò không gặp rắc rối lần nữa.
One morning, Odongo took his grandmother’s cows to graze. They ran onto a neighbour’s farm. The farmer was angry with Odongo. He threatened to keep the cows for eating his crops. After that day, the boy made sure that the cows did not get into trouble again.
Una mañana, Odongo llevó a las vacas de su abuela a pastar. Pero las vacas entraron en la granja de un vecino. El vecino se enojó con Odongo. Lo amenazó con quedarse con las vacas por haberse comido sus cultivos. Después de ese día, Odongo se aseguró que las vacas no se volvieran a meter en problemas.
Vào một ngày khác, bọn trẻ đi đến chợ với bà Nyar-Kanyada. Bà có một quầy bán rau, đường, và xà bông tắm. Apiyo thích báo giá bán của những món hàng cho khách. Odongo gói hàng mà khách đã mua.
On another day, the children went to the marketplace with Nyar-Kanyada. She had a stall selling vegetables, sugar and soap. Apiyo liked to tell customers the price of items. Odongo would pack the items that customers bought.
Otro día, los niños fueron al mercado con Nyar-Kanyada. Ella tenía un puesto para vender vegetales, azúcar y jabón. A Apiyo le gustaba decirle a los clientes cuánto costaban los productos. Odongo empacaba los productos para los clientes.
Đến cuối ngày, họ cùng uống trà với nhau. Bọn trẻ giúp bà đếm tiền mà bà kiếm được.
At the end of the day they drank chai tea together. They helped grandmother to count the money she earned.
Al final del día, tomaban té juntos. Le ayudaban a su abuela a contar cuánto dinero había ganado.
Nhưng chẳng bao lâu thì kì nghỉ đã hết và bọn trẻ lại phải quay lại trường trong thành phố. Nyar-Kanyada cho Odongo một cái nón và cho Apiyo một cái áo len. Bà gói thức ăn cho chuyến đi của chúng.
But too soon the holidays were over and the children had to go back to the city. Nyar-Kanyada gave Odongo a cap and Apiyo a sweater. She packed food for their journey.
Pero las vacaciones se terminaron muy rápido y los niños tuvieron que regresar a la ciudad. Nyar-Kanyada le regaló una gorra a Odongo y un chaleco a Apiyo. Luego les empacó comida para su viaje de vuelta a casa.
Khi bố đến đón, bọn trẻ không muốn đi. Bọn trẻ năn nỉ bà Nyar-Kanyada đi lên thành phố với chúng. Bà cười và bảo: “Bà già rồi, không ở trong thành phố được. Bà sẽ chờ các cháu về làng thăm bà nữa.”
When their father came to fetch them, they did not want to leave. The children begged Nyar-Kanyada to go with them to the city. She smiled and said, “I am too old for the city. I will be waiting for you to come to my village again.”
Cuando su padre vino a recogerlos, no querían irse. Los niños le suplicaron a Nyar-Kanyada que se fuera con ellos a la ciudad. Ella sonrió y les dijo: “Estoy muy vieja para la ciudad. Estaré esperándolos cuando vuelvan a mi aldea otra vez.”
Odongo và Apiyo ôm chặt và tạm biệt bà.
Odongo and Apiyo both hugged her tightly and said goodbye.

Khi Odongo và Apiyo đi học lại, chúng kể cho các bạn mình về cuộc sống trong làng. Vài đứa trẻ cảm thấy cuộc sống trong thành phố tốt hơn. Những đứa khác lại cảm thấy cuộc sống trong làng tốt hơn. Nhưng hầu hết mọi người đều cảm thấy là Odongo và Apiyo có một người bà tuyệt với!
When Odongo and Apiyo went back to school they told their friends about life in the village. Some children felt that life in the city was good. Others felt that the village was better. But most of all, everyone agreed that Odongo and Apiyo had a wonderful grandmother!
Cuando Odongo y Apiyo volvieron a la escuela, le hablaron a sus amigos acerca de la vida en la aldea. Algunos niños opinaron que la vida en la ciudad era buena. Otros opinaron que la aldea era mejor. ¡Pero lo más importante es que todos opinaron que Odongo y Apiyo tenían una abuela maravillosa!
