ادنگو و آپیو در شهر با پدرشان زندگی می‌کردند آنها برای تعطیلات لحظه شماری می‌کردند. نه فقط به خاطر تعطیل بودن مدرسه، بلکه به خاطر اینکه آنها به ملاقات مادربزرگشان می‌رفتند. او در یک روستای ماهیگیری نزدیک یک دریاچه زندگی می‌کرد.
Odongo and Apiyo lived in the city with their father. They looked forward to the holidays. Not just because school was closed, but because they went to visit their grandmother. She lived in a fishing village near a large lake.
Odongo y Apiyo vivían en la ciudad con su padre. Esperaban con ansias sus vacaciones. No sólo porque cerraban la escuela, sino porque iban a visitar a su abuela. Ella vivía en una aldea de pescadores cerca de un gran lago.
ادنگو و آپیو به خاطر اینکه دوباره زمان ملاقات مادربزرگ رسیده بود هیجان زده بودند. از شب قبل کیف هایشان را بستند وآماده ی سفر طولانی به روستای مادربزرگ شدند. آنها نمی‌توانستند بخوابند وتمام شب درباره ی تعطیلات صحبت کردند.
Odongo and Apiyo were excited because it was time to visit their grandmother again. The night before, they packed their bags and got ready for the long journey to her village. They could not sleep and talked the whole night about the holiday.
Odongo y Apiyo estaban emocionados con la idea de visitar de nuevo a su abuela. La noche antes del viaje, empacaron sus cosas y dejaron todo listo para irse a la aldea. No pudieron dormir y se quedaron toda la noche hablando sobre sus vacaciones.
روز بعد، صبح زود آنها با ماشین پدرشان به سمت روستا حرکت کردند. آنها از کنار کوه ها، حیوانات وحشی و مزرعه های چای گذشتند. آنها در راه تعداد ماشین ها را می‌شمردند و آواز می‌خواندند.
Early the next morning, they left for the village in their father’s car. They drove past mountains, wild animals and tea plantations. They counted cars and sang songs.
Temprano a la mañana siguiente, salieron de viaje a la aldea en el auto de su padre. Pasaron por las montañas y vieron animales salvajes y plantaciones de té. Contaron autos y cantaron canciones.
بعد از مدتی، بچه ها از خستگی خوابشان برد.
After a while, the children were tired and fell asleep.
Al poco tiempo, se cansaron y se quedaron dormidos.
پدر ادنگو و آپیو را وقتی که به روستا رسیدند صدا زد. آنها نیار-کانیادا، مادربزرگشان را در حالیکه زیر درخت روی حصیر در حال استراحت بود، دیدند. نیار-کانیادا در زبان لو، به معنای - دخترمردم کانیادا- است. او یک زن قوی وزیبا بود.
Father woke up Odongo and Apiyo as they arrived in the village. They found Nyar-Kanyada, their grandmother, resting on a mat under a tree. Nyar-Kanyada in Luo, means ‘daughter of the people of Kanyada’. She was a strong and beautiful woman.
El padre despertó a Odongo y Apiyo cuando llegaron a la aldea. Se encontraron a su abuela, Nyar-Kanyada, descansando con una manta debajo de un árbol. Nyar-Kanyada significa “hija de la gente de Kanyada” en el idioma Luo. La abuela era una mujer fuerte y hermosa.
نیار-کانیادا با خوشامد گویی آنها را به خانه دعوت کرد و با خوشحالی شروع به رقصیدن و آواز خواندن دور آنها کرد. نوه هایش هیجان زده بودند که هدیه هایی را که از شهر آورده بودند به او بدهند. ادنگو گفت اول کادوی مرا باز کن. آپیو گفت نه اول کادوی من.
Nyar-Kanyada welcomed them into the house and danced around the room singing with joy. Her grandchildren were excited to give her the presents they brought from the city. “First open my gift,” said Odongo. “No, my gift first!” said Apiyo.
Nyar-Kanyada les dio la bienvenida a su casa, bailando y cantando de alegría. Sus nietos estaban ansiosos por entregarle los regalos que le trajeron de la ciudad. “Abre mi regalo primero,” dijo Odongo. “¡No, mi regalo primero!” dijo Apiyo.
وقتی که نیار-کانیادا کادو را باز کرد به روش سنتی از آنها تشکر کرد.
After she opened the presents, Nyar-Kanyada blessed her grandchildren in a traditional way.
Después de abrir los regalos, Nyar-Kanyada le dio la bendición tradicional a sus nietos.
سپس ادنگو و آپیو به بیرون رفتند. آنها پروانه ها و پرندگان را دنبال کردند.
Then Odongo and Apiyo went outside. They chased butterflies and birds.
Después, Odongo y Apiyo salieron a jugar. Persiguieron mariposas y aves.
آنها از درخت ها بالا رفتند و در آب دریاچه آب بازی کردند.
They climbed trees and splashed in the water of the lake.
Escalaron árboles y chapotearon en el lago.
وقتی که هوا تاریک شد آنها برای خوردن شام به خانه برگشتند. قبل از اینکه بتوانند شامشان را تمام کنند، خوابشان برد!
When it was dark they returned to the house for dinner. Before they could finish eating, they were falling asleep!
Cuando oscureció, volvieron a la casa a cenar. ¡Se estaban quedando dormidos antes de terminar de comer!
روز بعد، پدر بچه ها به شهر برگشت وآنها را با نیار-کانیادا تنها گذاشت.
The next day, the children’s father drove back to the city leaving them with Nyar-Kanyada.
Al día siguiente, el padre de los niños se fue de vuelta a la ciudad y los dejó con Nyar-Kanyada.
ادنگو و آپیو به مادربزرگ در انجام کارهای خانه کمک کردند. آنها آب و هیزم آوردند. آنها تخم مرغ ها را از زیرپای مرغ ها جمع کردند و از باغ سبزی چیدند.
Odongo and Apiyo helped their grandmother with household chores. They fetched water and firewood. They collected eggs from the chickens and picked greens from the garden.
Odongo y Apiyo ayudaron a su abuela con las tareas del hogar. Fueron a buscar agua y leña. Recolectaron los huevos de las gallinas y recolectaron verduras de la huerta.
نیار-کانیادا به نوه هایش یاد داد که نان نرم درست کنند که با خورش بخورند. او به آنها نشان داد که چگونه برنج نارگیلی درست کنند که با ماهی کبآبی بخورند.
Nyar-Kanyada taught her grandchildren to make soft ugali to eat with stew. She showed them how to make coconut rice to eat with roast fish.
Nyar-Kanyada le enseñó a sus nietos a hacer ugali para comer con estofado. Les enseñó a hacer arroz con coco para comerlo con pescado asado.
یک روز ادنگو گاوهای مادربزرگش را برای چریدن بیرون برد. آنها به طرف مزرعه ی همسایه فرار کردند. کشاورز همسایه از ادنگو عصبانی شد و تهدید کرد که گاوها را برای خودش نگه می‌دارد چون گاوها محصولات کشاورزی او را خورده بودند. بعد از آن روز ادنگو حواسش را جمع کرد که گاوها دوباره دردسر درست نکنند.
One morning, Odongo took his grandmother’s cows to graze. They ran onto a neighbour’s farm. The farmer was angry with Odongo. He threatened to keep the cows for eating his crops. After that day, the boy made sure that the cows did not get into trouble again.
Una mañana, Odongo llevó a las vacas de su abuela a pastar. Pero las vacas entraron en la granja de un vecino. El vecino se enojó con Odongo. Lo amenazó con quedarse con las vacas por haberse comido sus cultivos. Después de ese día, Odongo se aseguró que las vacas no se volvieran a meter en problemas.
یک روز دیگر بچه ها با مادر بزرگ به بازار رفتند. او در آنجا یک غرفه داشت و سبزیجات، شکر و صابون می‌فروخت. آپیو دوست داشت که به مردم قیمت اجناس را بگوید. ادنگو چیزهایی که مشتری ها خریده بودند را در کیسه می‌گذاشت.
On another day, the children went to the marketplace with Nyar-Kanyada. She had a stall selling vegetables, sugar and soap. Apiyo liked to tell customers the price of items. Odongo would pack the items that customers bought.
Otro día, los niños fueron al mercado con Nyar-Kanyada. Ella tenía un puesto para vender vegetales, azúcar y jabón. A Apiyo le gustaba decirle a los clientes cuánto costaban los productos. Odongo empacaba los productos para los clientes.
در پایان روز آنها با هم چای می‌نوشیدند. آنها درشمارش پول به مادر بزرگ کمک می‌کردند.
At the end of the day they drank chai tea together. They helped grandmother to count the money she earned.
Al final del día, tomaban té juntos. Le ayudaban a su abuela a contar cuánto dinero había ganado.
اما تعطیلات خیلی زود تمام شد و بچه ها مجبور شدند که به شهر برگردند. نیار-کانیادا به ادنگو یک کلاه و به آپیو یک ژاکت داد. او برای سفرآنها غذا آماده کرد.
But too soon the holidays were over and the children had to go back to the city. Nyar-Kanyada gave Odongo a cap and Apiyo a sweater. She packed food for their journey.
Pero las vacaciones se terminaron muy rápido y los niños tuvieron que regresar a la ciudad. Nyar-Kanyada le regaló una gorra a Odongo y un chaleco a Apiyo. Luego les empacó comida para su viaje de vuelta a casa.
زمانی که پدرشان به دنبال آنها آمد آنها دوست نداشتند که آنجا را ترک کنند. آنها از نیار-کانیادا خواهش کردند که با آنها به شهر بیاید. او لبخند زد و گفت من برای زندگی در شهر زیادی پیر هستم. اما منتظر شما خواهم ماند تا دوباره به روستای من بیایید.
When their father came to fetch them, they did not want to leave. The children begged Nyar-Kanyada to go with them to the city. She smiled and said, “I am too old for the city. I will be waiting for you to come to my village again.”
Cuando su padre vino a recogerlos, no querían irse. Los niños le suplicaron a Nyar-Kanyada que se fuera con ellos a la ciudad. Ella sonrió y les dijo: “Estoy muy vieja para la ciudad. Estaré esperándolos cuando vuelvan a mi aldea otra vez.”
ادنگو و آپیو هر دو او را محکم در آغوش گرفتند و با او خداحافظی کردند.
Odongo and Apiyo both hugged her tightly and said goodbye.

زمانی که ادنگو و آپیو به مدرسه برگشتند برای دوستانشان اززندگی در روستا تعریف کردند. بعضی بچه ها احساس می‌کردند که زندگی در شهر خوب است اما بعضی دیگر فکر می‌کردند که روستا بهتر است. اما از همه مهم تر، همه موافق بودند که ادنگو و آپیو مادربزرگ خیلی خوبی دارند.
When Odongo and Apiyo went back to school they told their friends about life in the village. Some children felt that life in the city was good. Others felt that the village was better. But most of all, everyone agreed that Odongo and Apiyo had a wonderful grandmother!
Cuando Odongo y Apiyo volvieron a la escuela, le hablaron a sus amigos acerca de la vida en la aldea. Algunos niños opinaron que la vida en la ciudad era buena. Otros opinaron que la aldea era mejor. ¡Pero lo más importante es que todos opinaron que Odongo y Apiyo tenían una abuela maravillosa!
