كان أودنقو وأبيو يعيشان مع أبيهما في المدينة، وكانا ينتظران العطلة بفارغ الصبر، ليس فقط لأن المدرسة ستغلق أبوابها ولكن أيضا لأنهما يريدان زيارة جدتهما التي كانت تعيش في قرية صيد محاذية لبحيرة كبيرة.
Odongo and Apiyo lived in the city with their father. They looked forward to the holidays. Not just because school was closed, but because they went to visit their grandmother. She lived in a fishing village near a large lake.
Odongo y Apiyo vivían en la ciudad con su padre. Esperaban con ansias sus vacaciones. No sólo porque cerraban la escuela, sino porque iban a visitar a su abuela. Ella vivía en una aldea de pescadores cerca de un gran lago.
كان أودنقو وأبيو متحمسين أشد الحماس لأن الوقت قد حان لزيارة جدتهما من جديد. وفي الليلة التي سبقت الزيارة، حزم الصغيران حقائبهما واستعدا للرحلة الطويلة التي ستأخذهما إلى قرية جدتهما. لم يستطيعا ليلتها النوم، ولبثا يتحدثان عن العطلة طوال الليل.
Odongo and Apiyo were excited because it was time to visit their grandmother again. The night before, they packed their bags and got ready for the long journey to her village. They could not sleep and talked the whole night about the holiday.
Odongo y Apiyo estaban emocionados con la idea de visitar de nuevo a su abuela. La noche antes del viaje, empacaron sus cosas y dejaron todo listo para irse a la aldea. No pudieron dormir y se quedaron toda la noche hablando sobre sus vacaciones.
وفي صباح اليوم الموالي، امتطى الصغيران سيارة أبيهما وقصدا القرية باكراً. كانت السيارة تشق طريقها عبر الجبال وبين الحيوانات البرية ومزارع الشاي، وكان الصغيران يحصيان عدد السيارات ويغنيان.
Early the next morning, they left for the village in their father’s car. They drove past mountains, wild animals and tea plantations. They counted cars and sang songs.
Temprano a la mañana siguiente, salieron de viaje a la aldea en el auto de su padre. Pasaron por las montañas y vieron animales salvajes y plantaciones de té. Contaron autos y cantaron canciones.
لكن وبعد فترة من الوقت، شعر الصغيران بالتعب وغلبهما النعاس فاستسلما للنوم.
After a while, the children were tired and fell asleep.
Al poco tiempo, se cansaron y se quedaron dormidos.
أيقظ الأب الطفلين أودنقور وأبيو لدى وصولهما إلى القرية. وجد الصغيران جدتهما، نيار كنيادا، تستريح على حصير تحت شجرة. كان اسمها بلغة الليو يعني “ابنة شعب كنيادا” وكانت امرأةً جميلةً وقويةً.
Father woke up Odongo and Apiyo as they arrived in the village. They found Nyar-Kanyada, their grandmother, resting on a mat under a tree. Nyar-Kanyada in Luo, means ‘daughter of the people of Kanyada’. She was a strong and beautiful woman.
El padre despertó a Odongo y Apiyo cuando llegaron a la aldea. Se encontraron a su abuela, Nyar-Kanyada, descansando con una manta debajo de un árbol. Nyar-Kanyada significa “hija de la gente de Kanyada” en el idioma Luo. La abuela era una mujer fuerte y hermosa.
استقبلتهما الجدة بحفاوة في منزلها ورقصت وغنت من شدة الفرح. كان الحفيدان مغتبطين بإعطاء جدتهما الهدايا التي اشتروها لها من المدينة. قال أودنقو: “جدتي.. افتحي هديتي أنا أولاً”. وقالت ابيو: “لا جدتي، هديتي أنا أولاً”
Nyar-Kanyada welcomed them into the house and danced around the room singing with joy. Her grandchildren were excited to give her the presents they brought from the city. “First open my gift,” said Odongo. “No, my gift first!” said Apiyo.
Nyar-Kanyada les dio la bienvenida a su casa, bailando y cantando de alegría. Sus nietos estaban ansiosos por entregarle los regalos que le trajeron de la ciudad. “Abre mi regalo primero,” dijo Odongo. “¡No, mi regalo primero!” dijo Apiyo.
وبعد أن فتحت نيار كنيادا الهدايا، شكرت حفيديها وباركتهما على الطريقة التقليدية.
After she opened the presents, Nyar-Kanyada blessed her grandchildren in a traditional way.
Después de abrir los regalos, Nyar-Kanyada le dio la bendición tradicional a sus nietos.
بعد ذلك، خرج اودنقو وابيو إلى الحقول فلاحقا الفراشات والطيور.
Then Odongo and Apiyo went outside. They chased butterflies and birds.
Después, Odongo y Apiyo salieron a jugar. Persiguieron mariposas y aves.
وتسلقا الأشجار واستحما في ماء البحيرة.
They climbed trees and splashed in the water of the lake.
Escalaron árboles y chapotearon en el lago.
ولما أقبل المساء رجعا إلى المنزل ليتناولا العشاء. لكن قبل أن ينهيا طعامهما كان الصغيران قد غلبهما النعاس فناما.
When it was dark they returned to the house for dinner. Before they could finish eating, they were falling asleep!
Cuando oscureció, volvieron a la casa a cenar. ¡Se estaban quedando dormidos antes de terminar de comer!
وفي اليوم الموالي انطلق الأب بسيارته إلى المدينة وترك الصغيرين صحبة جدتهما نيار كنيادا.
The next day, the children’s father drove back to the city leaving them with Nyar-Kanyada.
Al día siguiente, el padre de los niños se fue de vuelta a la ciudad y los dejó con Nyar-Kanyada.
ساعد أودنقو وأبيو جدتهما في شؤون المنزل، فكانا يحضران الماء والحطب ويجمعان البيض من قن الدجاج ويلتقطان الخضار من الحديقة.
Odongo and Apiyo helped their grandmother with household chores. They fetched water and firewood. They collected eggs from the chickens and picked greens from the garden.
Odongo y Apiyo ayudaron a su abuela con las tareas del hogar. Fueron a buscar agua y leña. Recolectaron los huevos de las gallinas y recolectaron verduras de la huerta.
علمت نيار كنيادا حفيديها كيفية صنع الأوقالي اللين لتناوله مع الحساء، كما علمتهما كيفية صنع رز جوز الهند لتناوله مع السمك المحمر.
Nyar-Kanyada taught her grandchildren to make soft ugali to eat with stew. She showed them how to make coconut rice to eat with roast fish.
Nyar-Kanyada le enseñó a sus nietos a hacer ugali para comer con estofado. Les enseñó a hacer arroz con coco para comerlo con pescado asado.
وفي صباح أحد الأيام، أخذ أودنقو بقرات جدته إلى المرعى، فأسرعت البقرات بالدخول إلى حقل أحد المزارعين. غضب المزارع من أدنقو وهدد بأن يحتفظ بالبقرات عنده لأنها أكلت محصوله. ومنذ ذلك اليوم، عزم الولد على ألا يترك البقرات تتسبب في أي مشكل جديد.
One morning, Odongo took his grandmother’s cows to graze. They ran onto a neighbour’s farm. The farmer was angry with Odongo. He threatened to keep the cows for eating his crops. After that day, the boy made sure that the cows did not get into trouble again.
Una mañana, Odongo llevó a las vacas de su abuela a pastar. Pero las vacas entraron en la granja de un vecino. El vecino se enojó con Odongo. Lo amenazó con quedarse con las vacas por haberse comido sus cultivos. Después de ese día, Odongo se aseguró que las vacas no se volvieran a meter en problemas.
وفي يوم آخر، ذهب الصغيران مع نيار كنيادا إلى التسوق. كانت الجدة تضع الخضار والسكر والصابون على منصة لبيعها وكانت أبيو تعلم الزبائن بثمن السلع. أما أودنقو فقد كان يلف المشتريات للزبائن.
On another day, the children went to the marketplace with Nyar-Kanyada. She had a stall selling vegetables, sugar and soap. Apiyo liked to tell customers the price of items. Odongo would pack the items that customers bought.
Otro día, los niños fueron al mercado con Nyar-Kanyada. Ella tenía un puesto para vender vegetales, azúcar y jabón. A Apiyo le gustaba decirle a los clientes cuánto costaban los productos. Odongo empacaba los productos para los clientes.
وفي نهاية اليوم شربوا شاي تشاي معا وساعدوا الجدة في حساب المال الذي حصلت عليه.
At the end of the day they drank chai tea together. They helped grandmother to count the money she earned.
Al final del día, tomaban té juntos. Le ayudaban a su abuela a contar cuánto dinero había ganado.
غير أن العطلة انتهت بسرعة، وكان لزاماً على الصغيرين الرجوع إلى المدينة. أهدت نيار كنيادا قبعة لأودنقو وسترة لأبيو، كما أعدت لهم طعاماً من أجل الرحلة.
But too soon the holidays were over and the children had to go back to the city. Nyar-Kanyada gave Odongo a cap and Apiyo a sweater. She packed food for their journey.
Pero las vacaciones se terminaron muy rápido y los niños tuvieron que regresar a la ciudad. Nyar-Kanyada le regaló una gorra a Odongo y un chaleco a Apiyo. Luego les empacó comida para su viaje de vuelta a casa.
وعندما جاء أبوهما لاصطحابهما معه إلى المنزل، لم يريدا المغادرة، بل رجوا نيار كنيادا أن تذهب معهما إلى المدينة. ابتسمت الجدة وقالت: “لقد أصبحت عجوزاً، ولن أستطيع الذهاب إلى المدينة. سوف أنتظر حتى تعودا إلى قريتي من جديد”.
When their father came to fetch them, they did not want to leave. The children begged Nyar-Kanyada to go with them to the city. She smiled and said, “I am too old for the city. I will be waiting for you to come to my village again.”
Cuando su padre vino a recogerlos, no querían irse. Los niños le suplicaron a Nyar-Kanyada que se fuera con ellos a la ciudad. Ella sonrió y les dijo: “Estoy muy vieja para la ciudad. Estaré esperándolos cuando vuelvan a mi aldea otra vez.”
عانق أودنقو وأبيو جدتهما بحرارة وودعاها.
Odongo and Apiyo both hugged her tightly and said goodbye.
Odongo y Apiyo le dieron un abrazo muy apretado y le dijeron adiós.
ولما عاد أودنقو وأبيو إلى المدرسة، حدثا أصدقائهما عن الحياة في القرية. أحس بعض الأطفال أن الحياة في المدينة جميلة بينما أحس البعض الآخر أنها أجمل في القرية. لكنهم اتفقوا جميعا على ان لأدنقو وأبيو جدة رائعة.
When Odongo and Apiyo went back to school they told their friends about life in the village. Some children felt that life in the city was good. Others felt that the village was better. But most of all, everyone agreed that Odongo and Apiyo had a wonderful grandmother!
Cuando Odongo y Apiyo volvieron a la escuela, le hablaron a sus amigos acerca de la vida en la aldea. Algunos niños opinaron que la vida en la ciudad era buena. Otros opinaron que la aldea era mejor. ¡Pero lo más importante es que todos opinaron que Odongo y Apiyo tenían una abuela maravillosa!
