Odongo und Apiyo lebten mit ihrem Vater in der Stadt. Sie freuten sich auf die Ferien. Nicht nur weil sie dann nicht in die Schule mussten, sondern auch weil sie dann ihre Großmutter besuchen würden. Sie lebte in einem Fischerdorf in der Nähe eines großen Sees.
Odongo et Apiyo vivaient dans la ville avec leur père. Ils avaient hâte aux vacances. Non seulement parce que l’école serait fermée, mais parce qu’ils iraient rendre visite à leur grand-mère. Elle vivait dans un village de pêche près d’un grand lac.
Odongo and Apiyo lived in the city with their father.
They looked forward to the holidays. Not just because school was closed, but because they went to visit their grandmother. She lived in a fishing village near a large lake.
Odongo und Apiyo freuten sich, dass es Zeit war ihre Großmutter zu besuchen. Am Abend davor packten sie ihre Taschen und bereiteten sich für die lange Reise zu ihrem Dorf vor. Sie konnten nicht schlafen und redeten die ganze Nacht über den Urlaub.
Odongo et Apiyo avaient hâte parce que c’était à nouveau le temps de rendre visite à leur grand-mère. La veille, ils ont fait leurs valises et se sont préparés pour le long voyage jusqu’à son village. Ils ne pouvaient pas dormir et ils ont parlé toute la nuit à propos des vacances.
Odongo and Apiyo were excited because it was time to visit their grandmother again.
The night before, they packed their bags and got ready for the long journey to her village. They could not sleep and talked the whole night about the holiday.
Früh am nächsten Morgen machten sie sich im Auto ihres Vaters zum Dorf auf. Sie fuhren an Bergen, wilden Tieren und Teeplantagen vorbei. Sie zählten Autos und sangen Lieder.
Tôt le lendemain matin, ils sont partis vers le village dans la voiture de leur père. Ils ont vu des montagnes, des animaux sauvages et des plantations de thé. Ils ont compté les voitures et ont chanté des chansons.
Early the next morning, they left for the village in their father’s car.
They drove past mountains, wild animals and tea plantations. They counted cars and sang songs.
Nach einer Weile waren die Kinder müde und schliefen ein.
Après un certain temps, les enfants se sont endormis, fatigués.
After a while, the children were tired and fell asleep.
Vater weckte Odongo und Apiyo, als sie im Dorf ankamen. Nyar-Kanyada, ihre Großmutter, lag auf einer Matte unter einem Baum und entspannte sich. Nyar-Kanyada in Luo bedeutet „Tochter des Volkes von Kanyada“. Sie war eine schöne und starke Frau.
Papa réveilla Odongo et Apiyo lorsqu’ils arrivèrent au village. Ils ont trouvé leur grand-mère Nyar-Kanyada assise sous un arbre. En luo, Nyar-Kanyada veut dire « fille du peuple de Kanyada ». C’ était une femme belle et forte.
Father woke up Odongo and Apiyo as they arrived in the village.
They found Nyar-Kanyada, their grandmother, resting on a mat under a tree.
Nyar-Kanyada in Luo, means ‘daughter of the people of Kanyada’. She was a strong and beautiful woman.
Nyar-Kanyada bat sie ins Haus und tanzte freudig im Zimmer herum. Ihre Enkelkinder überreichten ihr begeistert ihre Geschenke. „Öffne mein Geschenk zuerst“, meinte Odongo. „Nein, meins zuerst!“, entgegnete Apiyo.
Nyar-Kanyada les a accueillis dans sa maison et a dansé tout autour de la salle en chantant de bonheur. Ses petits-enfants avaient hâte de lui donner les cadeaux qu’ils avaient apportés de la ville. « Ouvre mon cadeau en premier, » dit Odongo. « Non, ouvre le mien en premier ! » dit Apiyo.
Nyar-Kanyada welcomed them into the house and danced around the room singing with joy.
Her grandchildren were excited to give her the presents they brought from the city.
“First open my gift,” said Odongo.
“No, my gift first!” said Apiyo.
Nachdem sie die Geschenke geöffnet hatte, segnete Nyar-Kanyada ihre Enkelkinder auf traditionelle Art.

After she opened the presents, Nyar-Kanyada blessed her grandchildren in a traditional way.
Dann gingen Odongo und Apiyo nach draußen. Sie jagten Schmetterlingen und Vögeln nach.
Ensuite, Odongo et Apiyo sont sortis dehors. Ils ont poursuivi des papillons et des oiseaux.
Then Odongo and Apiyo went outside. They chased butterflies and birds.

They climbed trees and splashed in the water of the lake.
Als es dunkel war, gingen sie zum Abendessen ins Haus zurück. Noch bevor sie fertig waren, schliefen sie ein.
Quand la nuit tomba ils retournèrent à la maison pour souper. Ils se sont endormis avant même de finir de manger!
When it was dark they returned to the house for dinner. Before they could finish eating, they were falling asleep!
Am nächsten Tag fuhr der Vater zurück in die Stadt und ließ die Kinder bei Nyar-Kanyada.

The next day, the children’s father drove back to the city leaving them with Nyar-Kanyada.
Odongo und Apiyo halfen ihrer Großmutter im Haushalt. Sie holten Wasser und Feuerholz. Sie sammelten Eier von den Hühnern und ernteten Gemüse aus dem Garten.
Odongo et Apiyo ont aidé leur grand-mère à faire les tâches ménagères. Ils sont allés chercher de l’eau et du bois de chauffage. Ils ont ramassé les œufs des poules et ont cueilli des herbes aromatiques dans le jardin.
Odongo and Apiyo helped their grandmother with household chores. They fetched water and firewood. They collected eggs from the chickens and picked greens from the garden.
Nyar-Kanyada lehrte ihre Enkelkinder, wie man weichen Ugali als Beilage für den Eintopf zubereitet. Sie zeigte ihnen, wie man Kokosreis als Beilage zum Bratfisch macht.
Nyar-Kanyada a montré à ses petits-enfants comment faire de l’ugali mou pour manger avec du ragoût. Elle leur a montré comment faire du riz de noix de coco pour manger avec du poisson grillé.
Nyar-Kanyada taught her grandchildren to make soft ugali to eat with stew. She showed them how to make coconut rice to eat with roast fish.
Eines Morgens brachte Odongo Großmutters Kühe zum Grasen. Sie liefen hinüber zur Nachbarsfarm. Der Bauer war sehr böse auf Odongo. Er drohte, die Kühe als Entschädigung zu behalten. Von dort an passte der Junge genau auf, dass die Kühe keine Schwierigkeiten mehr machten.

One morning, Odongo took his grandmother’s cows to graze. They ran onto a neighbour’s farm.
The farmer was angry with Odongo. He threatened to keep the cows for eating his crops. After that day, the boy made sure that the cows did not get into trouble again.
An einem anderen Tag gingen die Kinder mit Nyar-Kanyada zum Markt. Sie hatte einen Stand, wo sie Gemüse, Zucker und Seife verkaufte. Apiyo hatte Spaß dabei, den Kunden die Preise für Dinge zu nennen. Odongo packte die Artikel ein, die die Kunden kauften.
Un autre jour, les enfants sont allés au marché avec Nyar-Kanyada. Elle avait un stand pour vendre des légumes, du sucre et du savon. Apiyo aimait donner le prix des articles aux clients. Odongo emballait ce que les clients achetaient.
On another day, the children went to the marketplace with Nyar-Kanyada. She had a stall selling vegetables, sugar and soap.
Apiyo liked to tell customers the price of items. Odongo would pack the items that customers bought.
Am Ende des Tages tranken sie einen Chai-Tee zusammen. Sie halfen Großmutter, das eingenommene Geld zu zählen.
À la fin de la journée, ils ont bu du thé chai ensemble. Ils ont aidé leur grand-mère à compter l’argent qu’elle avait gagné.
At the end of the day they drank chai tea together. They helped grandmother to count the money she earned.
Aber all zu schnell waren die Ferien zu Ende und die Kinder mussten in die Stadt zurückkehren. Nyar-Kanyada gab Odongo eine Kappe und Apiyo ein Sweatshirt. Sie packte Essen für die Reise.
Trop tôt, les vacances étaient terminées et les enfants devaient retourner à la ville. Nyar-Kanyada donna une casquette à Odongo et un chandail à Apiyo. Elle emballa de la nourriture pour leur voyage.
But too soon the holidays were over and the children had to go back to the city.
Nyar-Kanyada gave Odongo a cap and Apiyo a sweater. She packed food for their journey.
Als ihr Vater kam, um sie abzuholen, wollten sie nicht gehen. Die Kinder flehten Nyar-Kanyada an, mit ihnen in die Stadt zukommen. Sie lächelte und sagte: „Ich bin zu alt für die Stadt. Ich werde darauf warten, dass ihr wieder zu mir ins Dorf kommt.“
Quand leur père est venu les chercher, ils ne voulaient pas partir. Les enfants ont supplié Nyar-Kanyada de venir avec eux à la ville. Elle sourit et dit, « Je suis trop vieille pour la ville. J’attendrai votre retour à mon village. »
When their father came to fetch them, they did not want to leave. The children begged Nyar-Kanyada to go with them to the city.
She smiled and said, “I am too old for the city. I will be waiting for you to come to my village again.”
Odongo und Apiyo umarmten sie fest zum Abschied.
Odongo et Apiyo l’ont tous les deux embrassée fort et lui ont dit au revoir.
Odongo and Apiyo both hugged her tightly and said goodbye.
Als Odongo und Apiyo wieder in die Schule gingen erzählten sie ihren Freunden vom Dorfleben. Manche Kinder fanden das Leben in der Stadt gut. Aber vor allem waren sich alle einig, dass Odongo und Apiyo eine wundervolle Großmutter hatten!
Quand Odongo et Apiyo sont retournés à l’école ils ont raconté leurs histoires de la vie dans le village à leurs amis. Certains enfants croyaient que la vie en ville était bonne. D’autres étaient de l’avis que le village était meilleur. Et surtout, ils étaient tous d’accord que Odongo et Apiyo avaient une grand-mère merveilleuse !
When Odongo and Apiyo went back to school they told their friends about life in the village. Some children felt that life in the city was good. Others felt that the village was better.
But most of all, everyone agreed that Odongo and Apiyo had a wonderful grandmother!
